The United potato growers organizational movement started in the western United States. The ideas and concepts that were introduced quickly became an interesting topic in the potato board rooms of Canada. Communication between key industry leaders in Canada and the United States saw a meeting of the United Potato Growers of America (UPGA) Board of Directors take place in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, June 2005. The entire UPGA  board was in attendance and many key Canadian folks were also present. After this initial meeting, a subsequent meeting with expanded attendance was held in Toronto, Ontario, again with the entire UPGA board present, in August 2005. The outcome of this meeting was to initiate the formation of United Potato Growers of Canada (UPGC).
